Provence wildlife — January

Winter in Provence is a bit quieter when it comes to observing plants and animals in some places.
But not in all of them.
In January, many of the birds that usually live in North Europe have finally arrived in South of France: common cranes for example, but many other wintering birds too.
As for other animals, such as griffon vultures, it’s time for mating rituals.

Common cranes

Many common cranes migrated at the end of the previous year towards South of France (but also and mainly Spain). December and January are great months to go and watch them.

In January, griffon vultures are starting their mating rituals (they fly one above the other). This is the start of their reproduction season.
