Provence amphibian: palmate newt

Palmate newt: illustrated description

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Palmate newts have 3 fingers on their fore limbs and 5 webbed toes on their hind limbs.

FOOD

Palmate newts mostly feed on very small crustaceans (gammarids and daphnia), and larvae.

PREDATORS

Fish are the greatest predators of newts in general, so in order to give them the best habitat, do not add fish to your pond: they’ll have a better chance to survive and thrive.
Trouts are the main predators of palmate newts.
