Provence amphibian: fire salamander

Fire salamander: illustrated description

  • The fire salamander has 4 digits on their front feet and 5 digits on their back feet.
  • The hind legs of a fire salamander are not webbed.
  • The fire salamander is ovoviviparous: it gives birth to actual small salamanders (which aren’t fully developed yet).
  • Its average length is around 155 mm (either male or female), and can go up to 28 cm. It’s greater than a palmate newt‘s length or a great crested newt‘s.
